Taste Visualization for Pixar’s Ratatouille
Michel Gagné is a storied concept artist, illustrator, and writer who has done work for Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., and the Cartoon Network.
The above images are concept images he created for Pixar’s Ratatouille. He was given the direction to create visual images that would be used to help represent taste.
After discussing ideas and concepts with Brad Bird, I created a series of images to illustrate potential ideas of how the taste could be visualized in an abstract way.
Using two scores provided by Pixar, Gagné created over 1,400 drawings that were all elaborately matched up to musical cues to help represent the sense of taste visually.

I actually think this was pretty responsible. Rather than banning it outright, which would result in kids wanting to rebel even more, she offers it in her home where she can control the amount people drink. Good on ya, Mrs George. You’re a cool mom.
